WEQX has announced the lineup for the third annual free music celebration on Albany’s Pearl Street, Peal Palooza, which is slated for noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, place on North Pearl Street in downtown Albany (between Pine St. and Sheridan Ave.).

The headliners will be Matt & Kim on the mainstage, and a second stage will feature Capital Region acts. Matt & Kim will be returning to the region, having previously performed at Upstate Concert Hall (Northern Lights), SPAC, and Lark Fest.

UPDATE: Phantogram and Conehead Buddha have been added to this show

Hailing from Saratoga Springs, electronic rock duo Phantogram been praised by the likes of Pitchfork, Alternative Press, Spin and NPR. Founders Josh Carter (vocals, guitar, samples) and Sarah Barthel (vocals, keys, samples) are local indie rock heroes, turned international darlings.

One of the original genre-blending bands to grace the jam scene, Conehead Buddha plays songs you can dance to. Originally formed in late 1993, the band hit the touring circuit hard – making friends and fans all over the SUNY college circuit, New England, and the Southeastern states. In 2002, the band took a break, but in 2012 are back in full force playing live shows and with a new album. Present Perfect was just released this July.

EQX Main Stage Performers:

Matt & Kim: The Brooklyn-based duo have been crafting catchy pop tunes and filling dance floors since their 2006 debut. Rolling Stone says of the two, “one of the perkiest bands in indie rock, routinely whipping crowds into a crazy-dancing frenzy with their cheerfully spry keyboard-and-drums tunes.” Three albums later, they have brought their sound to the masses, playing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Coachella. They have also become favorites in the capital region, playing to packed crowds at Upstate Concert Hall (Northern Lights), SPAC, and Lark Fest. The band is currently in the studio for their newest album titled Lightning, due October 2, 2012, and the already released first single “Let’s Go”, as heard on WEQX.

Robert Delong: Delong began performing his genre-bending songs in 2010, where he uses MIDI interfaces, a full drum set, drum pads, keyboards, laptops and game controllers, looping his music to fuse electronic dance beats with rock ‘n’ roll melodies. Where some electronic acts often fail to be entertaining live, hidden behind mixing boards, Delong breaks barriers and excels. Not only does he play from behind a conglomerate of electronic equipment, but also switches to playing drum set, incorporating traditional drum beats with the ones he builds electronically, incorporating the sounds of pop, folk, rock and dubstep.

The Royal Concept: The Stockholm, Sweden four-piece, previously known as The Concept, has quickly been making a name for themselves since their debut in 2010. Blending sunny pop-rock with electronic elements, they’re collecting fans and turning heads with their self-titled debut EP, released in June 2012. The band is comprised of musicians that formerly were backing musicians for some of Sweden’s biggest pop acts. Now making and playing music on their own terms, they have created upbeat, catchy songs full of quick rhythms that have people world-wide dancing along with them.

Oberhofer: Emotion is what drives the psychedelic catchy pop rock tunes crafted by the oft-effervescent Brad Oberhofer on the bands 2012 debut Time Capsules II.  Drawing on a wide array of influences, the 21 year old is fixated on the idea of making philosophically minded, energetic melodies that just make people smile. Pitchfork says, “Oberhofer sounds like he’s expressing the kind of happy, life-affirming jitters you get when waiting on line for a roller coaster, or when you win concert tickets on the radio.”

Local Stage Performers:

Eastbound Jesus: Recently gracing the cover of Metroland, and being called “Albany’s best kept secret” by Upstate Live, Eastbound Jesus don’t fit well under any one genre, and choose to call what they do “Northern rock”. They shred on the banjo, they have sweet sounding vocal harmonies, they play ballads, they play fast paced rocking tunes, and it all comes from a real, genuine place that makes for a sound all their own. This six-piece from Greenwich have recently put out an incredibly well-crafted album entitled Holy Smokes! and have been packing venues throughout the area with an infectious energy that gets people dancing, hollering, smiling and finding a new appreciation for a sound that is both traditional and refreshing.

Wild Adriatic: Based in the Saratoga area, Wild Adriatic is a four piece rock band with heavy soul and blues influences making a name for themselves throughout the area. Talented, charming and soulful, they know how to fill a room with an energy that moves people to their feet. Their newest release Lock & Key, proves that they are just as fun on record as they are live. With danceable grooves, rocking riffs and pop sensibilities intact, they span many genres, appealing to anyone who’s got an appreciation for quality rock ‘n roll, and the desire to have a great time.

Barons in the Attic: Rock, pop, folk, alternative, you could use all of these to describe Barons in the Attic, but none would do the band justice. On their third and newest full length album, Turn It Off and Take Out the Battery, the band starts off strong and driving and takes you on a ride through genres and emotions, making stop in unsuspected places, some acoustic and charming, some so catchy you need to instantly hear them again. Now slightly more refined, their newest release sees a band at a new level of progress and song craft with songs that are great on record, and have an energy that transfers flawlessly into their raucous live shows.

MIRK: The Albany-based 7 piece alternative hip-hop powerhouse that seamlessly blends elements of Soul, R&B, Rap, Rock and Pop into a completely original, utterly unique hit making machine. Formed in Albany, NY in 2009 and led by frontman Josh “MIRK” Mirsky, MIRK has quickly established themselves as one of the must see bands of the capital region.  With contagious hooks, five part vocal harmonies, world class sax and an unrelenting rhythm section, they have made their live show an explosive, dance heavy in-demand event. 2012 has already been a big year for the band, with the release of their sophomore album Grind, and performances at both SXSW and three dates on Vans Warped Tour.

  1. I liked that one song but then they got overplayed and the others songs were kind of annoying to me. To each their own! It’s great that there is a free concert.

  2. Who wrote that Mirk blurb? “Seamless”, “World class”, “powerhouse”, “hit making machine”??? You can’t possibly be describing them. Sloppy & POPy is more like it.

  3. As someone who has been to dozens of mirk shows, I can attest that their music and live shows live up to the review.

  4. Couldn’t agree more with #2’s comment…you mean to tell me Albany couldn’t find ANYONE better than MIRK? Yikes.

  5. What is it about Albany free concerts that bring out the flamethrowers? If you don’t like the entertainment, you obviously shouldn’t go. No problem with that, but these are professional musicians that rightfully get paid for their efforts, and there is also considerable costs related not only to paying the acts but providing the framework (set up/cleanup/security etc.) to make such a presentation possible. Fretting over the quality of the opening act on a second stage seems petty and not productive.

  6. Cosmic Revenge has just been added to the afterparty at the Pearl Street Pub. Performance on the block party stages is currently pending.

Cosmic Revenge – Having seen releases on Fortified Audio, Car Crash Set, Whistla’s L2S Recordings, Distal and Mite’s Embassy Recordings along with forthcoming releases on Freshmore, Kastle’s new Symbols Recordings and Belgian label Pelican Fly–there’s no reason why Cosmic Revenge’s name should not be listed as one of the key artists right now coming out of Northern California.

    Get ready!

Brought to you by Heady Productions, and a special thanks to Pearl Street Pub!
