Michael Janairo is a writer who has been published in literary journals and newspapers around the world.

One of his poems, “An Offering,” was a recipient of a Line of Advance: Colonel Darron L. Wright Memorial Award, and was also nominated for a Rhysling Award, a top honor from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. His poem “For Your Own Safety: After Yinka Shonibare, MBE’s ‘Refugee Astronaut'” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His first published short story, “Out of Japan,” won the Tsujinaka Fiction Prize in the Abiko Quarterly, a journal that was published in Chiba, Japan.

Other work has been published in MacroMicroCosm, Event Magazine, Eye to the Telesceope, Sylvia Magazine, Mithila Review, Weirdbook, Star*Line, The Sunlight Press, Lontar, Abridged, Thimble Literary Magazine, and the anthology Long Hidden: Speculative Fiction From the Margins of History, among others.

Janairo has been a fellow at artist residency programs at Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia; Wellspring House in Ashfield, Massachusetts; and Loft Nota Bene in Cadaqués, Spain. He also has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he studied news writing with Robert McClory, among others, and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied fiction with Fiona Cheong, Catherine Gammon, Chuck Kinder, and Buddy Norden. He also attended the New York State Summer Writers Workshop, studying with Russell Banks and Marilynne Robinson. He lives and works in upstate New York.
